Planning underway for 2012

Thanks to all who were able to join us for our April artwalk event.  We might be one of the few orchestral organizations who can boast that breakdancing spontaneously occurred during our event. Things have been quiet over the summer while we continue to plan our next concerts.  We hope to keep pushing the envelope with each event being more compelling than the last.  We have some exciting work underway to develop the concept for next time, but it is taking more planning than any of the previous events, and we are expanding our team.  Stay tuned for more details.

In the meantime, we are pleased to announce that composer Jenni Brandon has joined our team as our Composer Liason.  With her help, we have recently launched our Composer Consultation Service (CCS) as a way to help provide access to top-notch professional instrumentalists to the broader the community of living orchestral composers.  If you are interested in more information, please visit our ‘Artist Services‘ page for details.  Even though our current submission deadline has passed, we hope to be offering another opportunity soon.

April 14th, 2011

Hello again, fans of TOU…We have been hard at work planning our next event, and are pleased to let you know that we will be performing again on April 14th at the Downtown LA Art Walk. We have a really interesting show that will feature some smaller ensembles that cover a broad range of styles as well as the addition of some production lighting, and even a set drummer, our friend James Killian! Please plan to join us between 6:30 and 9 for all or part of our six-course musical repast! Many things are building for us, and we hope to make our presence at the Art Walk a monthly occurrence. Keep an eye out here, and tell your friends. It should be another memorable evening as we quietly revolutionize the experience of orchestral music….

Call for scores

We are calling on our community of composers to once again consider submitting works for consideration for our upcoming event.  We are looking

Acknowledging our composers

for your most compelling works for any combination of string quartet, flute, and clarinet.  We need to receive your submissions as a PDF file mailed to us at admin@theOrchestraUnleashed.com.  There is also a $15 submission fee that goes to help us cover our administrative expenses.  You can pay the fee via PayPal or Credit Card through our online store here.  All submitted works will be considered not only for this event, but for future events as well.   In fact, we hope to include at least two works that were previously submitted and performed.  We are committed to providing our composers with great opportunities for their music to be heard.  The submissions will be received electronically only in order to save you both time as well as printing and postage costs.  In order for your work to be considered, please submit your fee along with an email with your score and MP3 of recording attached by Oct 29,2010.  We will consider submissions and will announce the selected works by the following Friday.

The guidelines for submission are:

  • Works should not exceed 7 minutes.
  • Our audience and focus is not on avant-garde or experimental styles.  We welcome sophisticated works that have a broad, non-technical appeal
  • We favor works with narrative elements, or clearly evocative elements that strike an emotional chord with audiences.  This is not only dreamy or melancholy music, but can also include joyous or frenetic work as well.

We will be selecting multiple works for this event.  We look forward to hearing from you!

What’s next?

We have been enjoying some wonderful feedback from those of you who were able to participate in our concerts last month. Again, the feedback was overwhelming.  Here are a few sample emails that we have received:

“I just wanted to send a “Congratulations” for two wonderful concerts last weekend~ Thank-you for inviting me to be a part of this wonderful orchestra and experience. All the friends, students and their families that attended the Sunday concert are still raving about the music and the presentation! All future success!” – G.A. – Violinist

“The concert was absolutely phenomenal. The sound of the orchestra…it is so blended and cohesive, all of these world class performers coming together with such power and grace and beauty and nuance. It was a joy to hear it in such an up close seat, too – what a great venue. I was pretty much mesmerized and transfixed the entire time – you picked such great piece from such talented composers. I didn’t see you right after the show so you couldn’t see my face…covered in tears! Your piece – I just can’t express how much it moved me. I loved the whole thing, but there were two parts of your music that had me weeping,…” – C.C. – Composer

“[the concert] was really, really cool; I *get* it now! ” – C.R. – FIlmmaker

“Congratulations, again, on an exciting programme! I salute you for putting together a wonderful orchestra, and for your outstanding work as a composer and conductor….The orchestra and the music are outstanding…” – J.I. – Producer

…there were many more conversations (Facebook) and other emails…but we can say that the enthusiasm for the project is disproportionate to the attendance.

We are eager to offer more of this wonderful fusion of music, art, and poetry to the Los Angeles community. We have some exciting developments coming up.   We are planning for a November concert of chamber music that will surely be an intimate and compelling presentation, and we will be making MP3 downloads and an on-demand video presentation of the event available as well.  Thanks to all for your support and enthusiasm, and for your partnership in creating a community around the creation of new orchestral music, affective art, and the spoken word.
