Our mission is to bring the richness of the orchestra to new audiences. For many people, this ensemble can seem foreign, academic, and even boring. People who enjoy the arts might never find themselves drawn to attend a concert of ‘classical’ music. We aim to redefine the experience of orchestral music, and to show a new generation the irresistible charms of this sound. In a digital downloading era, we provide something that cannot be translated into bits and bytes: an encounter with living sound. Our concerts create an intimate atmosphere that invites you into the unique chemistry of a space filled with live players and live audiences. The intimate experience comes along several dimensions:
1) Temporal- When you think of the orchestra, you may think music from centuries past. True, many of the Classical masters lived centuries ago, but there continues to be a living tradition of new music for orchestra that is constantly being expanded. With few exceptions, the music in our concerts has been composed in the last five years. We bring you fresh, new music for the orchestra. The more traditional, ‘classical’ music you will hear from many orchestras was written by people who never heard the sounds of airplanes, cars, and cell phones. Theirs was a world of horse-drawn carriages and unamplified sound. The music on our concerts is filled with the sounds and experiences of your world and your time. The palette is time-honored, but the sound is thoroughly modern.
2) Stylistic- The Orchestra Unleashed is about brining the orchestra to you. While we feature modern compositions for orchestra, our concerts will not leave you baffled or annoyed by academic or confounding chaos. If you have had an experience with ‘contemporary classical’ music, you may have found the music very difficult to understand and therefore enjoy. It may have featured complex and dissonant music that requires an advanced degree in music to fully appreciate. Our concerts are different. Although the works are new, the style and forms are designed for an audience with a broad musical background. Our pieces will draw on traditional techniques and sounds without being simplistic or naive. This is technically excellent music that invites you in.
3) Spatial- Our goal is to give you an experience with the orchestra, up-close and personal. Our concerts are in venues that allow you to connect with the individual players of the ensemble. By performing in smaller venues, we give our audiences a unique opportunity to connect with the ensemble. They enjoy the high-fidelity experience of having the rich fullness of the orchestral sound fill the space around them in a way that no playback system can match. Enter the space and touch the sound.
4) Emotional- We choose works that invite you into a world of emotion in sound. Through aesthetically rich narrations, poetry, and spoken word, you are steeped in an experience that melds rich language with rich music to draw you into a profound encounter with art. As each work is introduced with spoken word, you are ushered into the emotional world of the music that follows.
