The Orchestra Unleashed (TOU), a Los Angeles based 50-piece modern orchestra seeking to redefine the experience of orchestral music under the direction of Gustav Hoyer, is sending out a call for scores for their new Composer Consultation Service. This service gives composers a chance to have their works reviewed and evaluated by some of Los Angeles’ top orchestral and studio musicians as well as composers and conductors in the Los Angeles area.
What it is: The Composer Consultation Service (CCS) allows composers to have access to the expertise of top instrumental performers, conductors, and composers. This select panel of musicians will review the participating composer’s score and parts for playability and to help the composer ensure that his or her score and parts are performance-ready. This service is geared toward composers who would like their orchestral or chamber works reviewed for any possible technical problems before a reading session, a world premiere, or recording session to ensure the smoothest performance of their work. CCS panel will review and provide written evaluations including instrument ranges, markings and overall neatness of the score – basically everything expected from score to make it as professional as possible for the conductor and the performers. Any style of music is accepted, and evaluations do not include a style/aesthetic review of the score. You can learn about some of our players here.
Wonderful, very helpful ! A clear and concise rating system, and all the additional comments assist in understanding the thought process of the performer. Great consulting service (especially for composers in my circumstances!). - Frederic Glesser
I got a lot out of trying the composer consultation service at The Orchestra Unleashed. The comments on my score were practical and to the point. It’s great to have feedback from live musicians. – Bill Garn
[The comments] look really good and helpful. Thank you again. – Martin Vitous
What is required: The composer will provide:
1) MP3 recording (computer rendered is acceptable)
2) PDF of the score
3) PDF of each instrumental part
The Composer Consultation Service panel will review the composer’s work for playability and offer expert insight into what is expected from a professional score.
Cost and what is provided:
The cost of the CCS varies by instrumentation and includes written evaluations by a member of each family of instruments (winds, brass, percussion, piano, high strings, low strings). Evaluation forms will be filled out and returned to the composer via PDF within three weeks following the score deadline. These evaluations can then be used by the composer to help make their score as clear as possible and avoid any possible problems in the rehearsal or performance of the work. Printing of composer’s score and parts for evaluation purposes is also covered in this cost. Contact us for a detailed quote.
All scores submitted to the CCS will be included in the performance library of The Orchestra Unleashed for future programming consideration.
